Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do not be partners with them.
(Ephesians 5:6-7)
LIFE CHANGING NEWS
In a time of nonstop bad news, here’s some great news. And we aren’t just talking about a tiny glimmer of hope, or a slight silver lining. It is actually astronomical, on many different levels. This new information (which isn’t really new) has the potential to profoundly change the lives of millions of people. Literally.
In short, a recent landmark study by University College London and published in the Journal of Molecular Psychiatry—which reviewed many other studies—revealed that the chemical imbalance theory is wrong.
That is, depression is not caused by a “chemical imbalance” in the brain, and low serotonin levels are, in fact, not to blame, as so many have been led to believe.
WHY IT MATTERS
So what’s the big deal? Why does this even matter?
In some ways, the Holy Grail of the psychiatric and counseling industries is finding the cause of what is usually labeled as “mental illness.” And discovering the cause of a problem usually leads to the solution.
So while there was no real “a-ha!” moment of clear discovery, over the years there has been a slow but steadily growing narrative that these “disorders” or “diseases” were caused by a malfunction in the brain. Along with this, came the proposed remedy: creating and dispensing drugs that, in theory, would re-balance, or replenish the chemicals in a person’s brain. Problem solved.
But something was wrong. Terribly wrong. While there were those who found relief from their symptoms by taking medication, at least temporarily, these maladies keep getting worse and worse overall. Nevertheless, those piloting the metaphorical boat stuck with this unproven hypothesis, all while minimizing or ignoring the glaring lack of any evidence to support their theory. Of course, this is the opposite of how science works, not to mention the polar opposite of how to care for others.
But this new report has the potential to change all of that.
While the counterfeit cause led to so much needless suffering, the damage can now be stopped. Immediately. Millions can be freed from this falsehood, based on the truth plainly revealed. Better yet, people can now seek and find the actual remedy to what has plagued them.
Simply put, this is truly great news. However, it may initially be very painful to hear. And for some, it will be difficult to believe.
Although it can be rightly said that everyone makes mistakes, something of this magnitude was no mere mistake. It may have started with good intentions, but all along the many problems were clear. The lack of evidence was evident. The conflicts of interest were well known and painfully obvious. Nevertheless, few stopped what they were doing in order to acknowledge the truth and make corrections. As a result, those behind this canard, and those they deceived, kept pushing the false cause and its equally false “cure.”
But will anyone be held accountable?
10 CONSEQUENCES OF A FALSE NARRATIVE
Just how bad is this particular deception? While it would be impossible to quantify the amount of damage it has inflicted and continues to wreak on individuals, families, and on our society as a whole for more than fifty years, let’s take a look at some of the most destructive outcomes of this false narrative.
- DECEPTION ON A GRAND SCALE
This deceit was perpetuated year after year after year—and, as a result, it deceived billions all over the world (few things in history have deceived more people). - MEDICATED NEEDLESSLY
This resulted in hundreds of millions of people taking drugs that they did not need (this is not discounting cases of medications when truly needed). - HORRIBLE SIDE EFFECTS
This, in turn, led to hundreds of millions of people needlessly suffering each and every day from many harmful side-effects (including, but not limited to anxiety, depression, violent thoughts and behavior, suicidal or homicidal ideation, infertility, birth defects, etc.) - TRUE CAUSE MASKED
This counterfeit cause effectively kept hundreds of millions of people from addressing the actual cause of their depression (and other struggles like anxiety, etc.). - PROLONGED SUFFERING
By dissuading them from seeking and finding actual remedies, this prolonged and/or intensified the suffering of hundreds of millions of people—some permanently. - PERPETUAL SYMPTOMS
In tragic irony, this has led to more and more anxiety, depression (hopelessness) and many similar, yet avoidable, struggles and suffering. - OBSCURED GOD’S DESIGN
This fallacy fundamentally perverted our much needed understanding of God’s design for life. As a result, much of what is normal and by design, has now been reclassified as “malfunctions,” “diseases,” and “illnesses,” which can then only be treated with drugs. - NEGATIVE COMMUNITY IMPACT
In addition to the suffering of countless individuals—an untold number of families, relationships, workplaces, churches, and societies have also suffered greatly as a result of this deception, erroneous cause, and wrong solution. - TRAGIC DEATHS
Perhaps worst of all, this lie has, directly or indirectly, led to the deaths of an unknown number of individuals, many of whom likely suffered immensely before they died. - ENSLAVED TO LIES
Overall, our society has been so conditioned by this fallacy that most people will have enormous difficulty wrapping their minds around this, not to mention believing the truth and applying the real solutions; therefore, most will likely still be stuck in this harmful falsehood.
Although breaking down these primary consequences as we have done can be helpful, it is still extremely difficult to articulate the level of error, incompetency, and even corruption involved in all of this.
IMAGINE THIS
Here’s a somewhat lengthy illustration to help us grasp the magnitude of this disastrous deceit. Imagine that for many years the pharmaceutical and medical industry told their patients and the world they had discovered that X was causing cancer. And imagine they assured everyone they possessed drugs (albeit very costly ones with harmful side-effects) which would essentially cure cancer, or at least hold it at bay. Now imagine if, after a few decades, it came to light that this proclamation was entirely false, and there was never really any evidence for these claims. Imagine too that many in these industries were, for the most part, aware of all this—and while some did speak out, others stuck to their guns.
Furthermore, and much, much worse—imagine that there had been, all along, treatments that would have directly addressed the true cause, capable of bringing about genuine healing. Finally, imagine that as a result of this false narrative, people needlessly suffered in horrible ways, and many died.
While obviously not an exact parallel, this is similar to what has happened regarding the so-called “chemical imbalance theory,” and its “cure.”
Now imagine, it gets worse. Just imagine that all this happened, but no one really said much about it, and it failed to make big headlines, especially in America.
This is essentially what is currently unfolding with these new revelations regarding “chemical imbalances” in the brain.
GETTING TO THE TRUTH
In spite of this, there is good news. We can all do something about this colossal injustice which has the potential to help millions of people going forward. In pursuit of this goal, we will bring many falsehoods and truths to light. This, in turn, will help us overflow with hope, truth, and many answers as well.
What we are talking about is literally a matter of life and death. The truths we learn, if applied, have the potential to not only bring an end to needless suffering from very real anxiety and depression, but can also literally save lives. However, this will only happen if we accurately understand and then rightly respond to these realities.
EXAMINING THE EVIDENCE
First, here is a direct link to the in-depth research from the Journal of Molecular Psychiatry, which is worth the read and invaluable as an original source:
The serotonin theory of depression: a systematic umbrella review of the evidence
Next, here are a handful of current articles referencing the UCL Study above, which are informative in various ways. Rather than expound on each of them, we will list several of the crucial quotes and main points, and then make some conclusions.
“But he said many medics continued to prescribe the medication, even while they were unsure if they were effective, because it was ‘easier’ than offering more time-intensive care.” (emphasis added)
“The pills could still help some patients, he added, but they are not a ‘cure-all’ for those suffering from depression.”
“Lead author Professor Joanna Moncrieff, a psychiatrist, said: ‘The popularity of the “chemical imbalance” theory has coincided with a huge increase in the use of antidepressants. Thousands suffer from side effects of antidepressants, including severe withdrawal effects that can occur when people try to stop them, yet prescription rates continue to rise.’”
“At the same time, a raft of studies have suggested they [antidepressants] don’t work any better than a placebo.” (emphasis added)
“The UCL study, published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry, analyzed 17 previous reviews dating back to 2010 and consisting of dozens of individual trials. It does not prove SSRIs don’t work. However, it does suggest the drugs don’t treat depression by fixing abnormally low serotonin levels.” (emphasis added)
“SSRIs have no other proven way of working, Professor Moncrieff and colleagues said.”
“We can safely say that after a vast amount of research conducted over several decades, there is no convincing evidence depression is caused by serotonin abnormalities, particularly by lower levels or reduced activity of serotonin.” (emphasis added)
“They found there was no difference in serotonin levels between people diagnosed with depression and healthy people, despite polls suggesting up to 95 per cent of the public believing this is the case.” (emphasis added)
In other words: Despite all the evidence to the contrary, up to 95% of the public was deceived into believing in one or more massive falsehoods regarding depression, and its cause.
Depression is not caused by low serotonin levels
“‘I had been taught that depression was caused by low serotonin in my psychiatry training and had even taught this to students in my own lectures. Being involved in this research was eye-opening and feels like everything I thought I knew has been flipped upside down.’ says Mark Horowitz, a training psychiatrist and clinical research fellow in psychiatry at University College London and an author of the study.” (emphasis added)
Depression is ‘not caused by chemical imbalance’
“Depression is not a chemical imbalance in the brain and scientists have no idea how antidepressants work, a review by University College London has concluded.” (emphasis added)
“Many people take antidepressants because they have been led to believe their depression has a biochemical cause, but this research suggests this belief is not grounded in evidence.” (emphasis added)
In other words: Millions of people have an utterly false understanding of the cause of their personal depression or that of their loved ones. And, more importantly, they have an entirely false understanding of the solution.
Furthermore, these observations and corrections are not knee-jerk reactions. Rather, they are drawn from “a vast amount of research conducted over several decades” – all of which points to a total failure on the parts of several groups prior to this new reporting.
Little evidence that chemical imbalance causes depression, UCL scientists find
“In the new analysis, researchers said 85% to 90% of the public believed depression was caused by low serotonin or a chemical imbalance.”
“We do not understand what antidepressants are doing to the brain exactly, and giving people this sort of misinformation prevents them from making an informed decision about whether to take antidepressants or not.” (emphasis added)
“Thousands of people suffer from side-effects of antidepressants, including the severe withdrawal effects that can occur when people try to stop them, yet prescription rates continue to rise. We believe this situation has been driven partly by the false belief that depression is due to a chemical imbalance. It is high time to inform the public that this belief is not grounded in science.” (emphasis added)
Depression Is Not Caused by Chemical Imbalance in the Brain
“Many people take antidepressants believing their depression has a biochemical cause. Research does not support this belief.” (emphasis added)
“if you hear a medical professional using the term ‘chemical imbalance’ to explain depression, you are hearing a fictional narrative (or a sales pitch), not scientific fact.” (emphasis added)
In other words: What we have been told about the cause of depression is wrong for the most part—at least when it comes from the pharmaceutical, medical, and psychology industries.
Ideas have consequences. And as a result of these particular erroneous ideas, billions of people over the past several decades have been taught lies about the source of their excruciating pain, not to mention that they have been given the wrong solution.
That’s kind of a big deal. This is not like a misdiagnoses here or there. This is astronomical. Depression is a colossal and worldwide problem. Millions of people are suffering right now. And billions of dollars are spend every week in addressing this. Yet those largely in charge of all this have profoundly misled us in this critical area of life and care.
This is a staggering scandal, is it not? In an age fixated on fighting injustice, helping victims, and speaking truth to power, shouldn’t more people be outraged by this?
REVEALING RESPONSES
Now this I say lest anyone should deceive you with persuasive words.
(Colossians 2:4)
How did this fallacy gain such a stronghold? Well, there are many reasons, many of which have been cited and laid out above. In addition, many faulty notions and erroneous responses are often repeated when this problem is brought up, or questioned. Because of the prevailing power of the counterfeit cause, we often hear people say things like:
“My problem is that I have a chemical imbalance.”
“Unfortunately, I’m just stuck with this. Like my family members, I’ll be stuck with this for the rest of my life, and have to be on medication until I die.”
“My doctor told me the receptors in my brain just aren’t working like they should. Fortunately, there are drugs that will fix this.”
“Certain chemicals in my brain have been depleted, which has caused my chemical imbalance.”
“My serotonin levels are low, so I need SSRI’s to replenish them.”
“I need these meds just like a diabetic needs insulin.”
I cannot tell you how many times I have heard similar assertions to the ones above. Notice, however, that no one came up with these “persuasive words” on their own. They are merely repeating what they have been told. And the more they repeat it, the more they, and others, believe it. This is not exactly a new phenomenon.
If a lie is only printed often enough, it becomes a quasi-truth, and if such a truth is repeated often enough, it becomes an article of belief, a dogma, and men will die for it.
(Isabella Blagden)
What is more, when I probe a little, and ask a question or two, there is usually immediate and strong push back. And sometimes there is scoffing, name calling, or even cutting off the conversation entirely, if not the relationship. Whatever the response, the message is clear: “Don’t you dare ask questions about what I have been told by my ______ (counselor; therapist; doctor; pastor). This is science. How dare you doubt it?”
Why do some people react this way? Why such a sharp response, one which is so closed off, and refuses to objectively listen, reason together, or even entertain the possibility of a better way?
For one, this is, naturally, a very sensitive subject. Which I fully understand, as I have the unique privilege of addressing this with people who come to me for counseling. Two, they often assume, falsely, what I believe, or what others believe. Three, much of our society has been conditioned to believe certain people, especially where science is assumed to be involved. Four, if something is considered to be science, then to question it is, in the minds of many, to be a science-denier or to be against medication completely.
However, by definition, everything in science should be questioned and challenged. A true proponent of science and truth welcomes both questions and challenges—with the aim of avoiding harmful errors while gaining an accurate understanding. In fact, this was the goal and outcome of this umbrella study.
Unfortunately, because we have also been taught, and conditioned (often through shaming, censoring, and canceling) to not challenge popular ideas parading as science (e.g., “the science is settled”)—or other prevailing constructs and false narratives in society—deception and erroneous ideas have flourished. This “Totalitarian Echo-Chamber” has resulted in a spike in harmful ideas and widespread deception in the past five to ten years.
One good thing should be highlighted here. We can now put to rest, once and for all, the fallacy which states something like this: “We need to take certain medications for anxiety and depression, just like a diabetic needs to take insulin.” Whoever tells you that is likely well-intended, but, unfortunately, he or she is spreading a myth. Perhaps we can now all agree that such an assertion is very misleading, as confirmed by UCL professor of psychiatry and lead author of the UCL study:
“In particular, the idea that antidepressants work in the same way as insulin for diabetes is completely misleading. We do not understand what antidepressants are doing to the brain exactly, and giving people this sort of misinformation prevents them from making an informed decision about whether to take antidepressants or not.”
(Dr. Joanna Moncrieff)
Hopefully this new (old) information will help change these standard, but false, responses. As a result, an untold number of people can be set free by admitting the truth, making necessary corrections, and sharing the right solutions.
CORRECTING & CLARIFYING THE CAUSE
Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression,
but a good word makes it glad.
(Proverbs 12:25)
Keep in mind that the information in the above referenced articles are mainly addressing the cause. Depression is not caused by a “chemical imbalance,” nor does it have a “biochemical cause.” Nor do the articles state that people should not take medication.
What is being said is—given the facts and faulty conclusions, and the side-effects of medication—is that we should correct our understanding about the cause, and rethink what medications we take, and why we are taking them (e.g., to treat the symptom, at best, not the cause).
Nevertheless, despite this wealth of information—and the logic and truth behind it—depression and anxiety will still likely be forever labeled as “diseases,” “mental illnesses,” and “diseases of the mind” (as if the nonphysical mind can have physical properties like a disease or illness). Unfortunately, because the chemical imbalance assertion is so sacred, so deeply embedded in our society, and because so many are so fully invested in this fallacy, it likely won’t be going away any time soon.
There are multitudes who have bought into this lie, and, wittingly or not, have been spreading this false narrative for years. And, to the degree people are invested in the wrong cause of depression, they will have a very hard time renouncing this. Yet, fortunately there will be some—a tiny fraction most likely—who will go and make things right with those they have misled and harmed.
On the other hand, those who question or challenge this longstanding falsehood will almost certainly still be considered “science-deniers,” “anti-science,” or worse, and the usual set of false accusations will continue to be hurled, particular toward Biblical Counselors, and other Bible-believing Christians:
You probably think everything is caused by sin.
You’re just against medication!
How dare you blame and shame people who are suffering from depression?
You’re stigmatizing those who suffer from mental illness.
You believe they’re possessed, have a “demon of depression,” or that it’s all just a “spiritual issue.”
You probably think we can pray it away, or just need more faith.
You’re saying anyone who suffers from this is a bad person – or a bad Christian.
Anyone who would question this has never experienced a deep depression or real anxiety.
You clearly know nothing about science.
While these are all common false accusations, they actually end up harming those who are already suffering even more. In addition, these slanderous responses grieve God and hurt those who are trying to help. Of course, this also harms the false accuser. Overall, these responses also enable the destruction that goes hand in hand with this false narrative.
It is important to note, that even with the untruth inherent in the responses above, there is often still some truth here. For example: There are times when sin is a factor, prayer is always important, and trusting God is usually a huge part of the equation.
But it is also important to realize that when it comes to depression and anxiety, it is rarely an all-or-nothing matter. There are usually a multitude of factors that go into the cause and, likewise, the solution. Similarly, when it comes to faith or trusting God, as an example, this is not an issue where you either trust God completely, or you don’t trust Him at all. Every Christian, by definition, does trust God. And all of us, at least at times, struggle to trust Him. This is hardly unusual. What is more, many amazing believers struggle at times in their belief.
I do believe, help me overcome my unbelief.
(Mark 9:24)
ANXIETY & DEPRESSION ARE NORMAL
One titanic truth which is hard for many to believe is this: Anxiety and depression are actually normal.
The feelings of anxiety or depression are not mistakes or malfunctions. God fashioned us this way on purpose. In fact, these feelings reveal that our mind and body are working exactly as He divinely intended.
A life-altering reality we must all grasp is this: Our Creator intentionally designed us to experience unwanted and painful feelings.
But why would He do such a thing?
As we have explored elsewhere, anxiety and depression are God designed and often life-saving indicators and motivators. Therefore, if we think about this more biblically—and if we rightly understand how God made us (i.e., His purpose for unwanted feelings)—and learn to connect the dots, then we can discover many answers to life’s problems, especially when it comes to depression.
Tragically, however, this self-evident, biblical, and invaluable understanding usually gets thwarted, and even mocked. Why? Mainly because, as we have seen, our society has been conditioned to view depression and anxiety as malfunctions, diseases, or largely biochemical issues.
Furthermore, this was deemed “settled” without any clear evidence—not to mention in spite of common sense, the Bible, and mounds of evidence to the contrary. And it was declared to be science. Making matters worse, the pills given in “treatment” often defeat the purpose of these life-saving, life-improving indicators and motivators.
The reality and gravity of this deceit must sink in to our society—especially to the powers that be. Otherwise, those in control will not apply the correction needed. Even worse, this will enable other harmful false narratives to thrive and new ones will be hatched, relatively unopposed.
Sadly, many will continue to respond angrily and sharply—and with false accusations and rationalizations—to anything that does not fit the (debunked) false narrative. Hopefully this new information will be the breakthrough some desperately need. If enough people break free and believe the truth—enough to reach a critical mass—then much of society and the world will greatly benefit as well.
Ultimately, no matter what people choose to believe, or how they respond, none of this changes the fact that there are many clear solutions to anxiety and depression. Yes, they are easier said than done. But they can be done. They can be overcome. Best of all, life is so much easier, less painful, and more enjoyable when we understand and apply God’s abundant answers to this often devastating issue.
Strangely, the biggest hurdle in overcoming anxiety and depression isn’t finding a solution. Instead, the main obstacles are the distortions, denial, and attacks that frequently occur regarding the solutions—and those who enable these attacks through their actions, or inaction.
So yes, there are numerous answers. Many individuals have learned and applied them, and have experienced relief, along with much, much more. Thankfully—as people are freed from the bondage of this destructive fallacy—even more will be truly set free from depression by accurately addressing the correct cause.
11 COMMON OBJECTIONS
Sadly, despite an abundance of logic, truth, and evidence, there will still be many who simply refuse to acknowledge and believe it, and, ultimately, change their mind. While this is to be expected, it is important for us to understand why so many people will refuse to fully embrace this life saving truth. Here are some of the most common objections to be aware of.
- Some will, as Jesus similarly taught, strain at a gnat while swallowing a camel. In other words, they will redirect the focus to smaller things and nitpick at minor issues, all while avoiding the overall reality. This could be the number one objection.
- Some will respond by attacking those who present these truths. This is also largely why this deadly deceit has lasted for decades.
- Some have so much invested in this (e.g., their career; money; their credibility; they have told this to many people; they have been taking meds for years), that they fear what would happen if they admit this truth.
- Some will think they are betraying loved ones who are invested in this false narrative (e.g., a loved one taking medication, or who teaches this lie, etc.).
- Some will fear being mocked and seen as anti-science, uneducated, unintelligent, or as a simpleton, conspiracy theorist, crazy Christian who believes, “If you just had more faith …”, etc.
- Some will fear going against their doctor, counselor, or even against their pastor or Christian leader.
- Some will dread having to confess to those they have misled for years—therefore they will double-down (while others might just slowly and quietly back off this falsehood).
- Some will fear coming off of medicine [again, the truth about the faulty cause does not mean it is always wrong to take medicine—it just means that a great many people who are prescribed medicine do not need it. Why? Because their prescriptions are often based on error (e.g., the wrong cause of depression).]
- Some have been so conditioned that this is science, science is pure truth and can’t be wrong, and that anyone who goes against (what is claimed to be) science is anti-science. (In great irony, this was never science, and has always been anti-science and anti-humanity.)
- Some have so demonized those who tried to warn about these erroneous and harmful conclusions, that this deceit has become deeply ingrained in them (cp. 2 Tim 3:13). In addition, they fear how the vilified people might respond if they do admit to wrongdoing and wrong thinking.
- Some will simply fear the unknown—of all that might happen if they admit this, and what they might have to do, and what might happen to them.
Ultimately, whether we encounter these objections with others or even within ourselves, we need to guard against fear, while holding on to what is true.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
A prudent man foresees evil and hides himself,
But the simple pass on and are punished.
(Proverbs 22:3)
The realities exposed in this study, and in these articles are, indeed, helpful. But, even then, they are not needed.
Why? Because … truth is truth.
This theory was always erroneous. There was never any proof. And people of all stripes, all faiths, all countries, all political persuasions—not to mention inside and outside of the medical and psychology industries—knew the chemical imbalance idea was false.
Nevertheless, perhaps this new information will be the needed catalyst to change more minds. So let’s use this opportunity to not only expound on what we have learned and gain a deeper understanding, but to also change hearts and minds (literally), as we point the way to where we need to go from here.
THE CHEMICAL (DIS)CONNECTION FROM REALITY
Declaring that depression is caused by a chemical imbalance is equivalent to proclaiming that anger is caused by a chemical imbalance. Pardon the expression, but that’s crazy.
In reality, they are both normal responses. Both may be unpleasant, if not extremely painful. And, when they reach a certain level of intensity, both can distort our thinking and hinder our ability to objectively process our surroundings (cp. Ps 73:21-22). Nevertheless, they are both natural and necessary, and, as a result, should be handled in the correct ways. And, overall, while certain chemicals flow in both states, neither is caused by chemicals.
DECEPTION THAT CAUSES DEPRESSION
This deceit (of a chemical imbalance) has depressing outcomes. One reason for this is that many sufferers believe they only control one main thing when it comes to their depression: taking pills. This lie not only gives them a false hope, it always leads to hopelessness (i.e., depression).
This also means that they are essentially putting all their hope in pills, rather than where it should be. As a result, they are left with the belief that these pills are their one main hope. No wonder so many people are increasingly hopeless.
According to the chemical theory about depression (and anxiety), the general prevailing mindset is: “This is a disease. Therefore, we are powerless to do much, if anything to change ourselves. We’re simply stuck with this illness. So, when we feel anxious or depressed, it’s our brain’s fault. As a result, our one main hope is to find the right drugs. What we need, then, is the right chemical mix, through the right dosage, to thwart this disease.”
False hope often feels good for a while, but it always ends in hopelessness, or worse.
There is a way that seems right to a man,
But its end is the way of death.
(Proverbs 14:12)
HOPE & GROWTH FROM SANCTIFICATION
We all have a lot of work to do on our hearts. All of us. Those who experience anxiety or depression are not exceptions to this rule.
Biblically speaking, this necessary growth process is referred to as sanctification (e.g., Jn 17:17). More specifically, whenever sin is involved, repentance is what is needed. Both of these are blessings which involve a process, whereby we work hard at changing our hearts over a period of time. This is common. This is good! This is a necessary aspect of life – an aspect that is life-protecting, and life-giving. It is also hard work—and believers are called to do these things as a way of life (e.g., Eph 4:11-32; Col 3:1ff).
Believe it or not, anxiety and depression, as excruciating as they can be, can also be invaluable in this process of growing and overcoming. How so? As mentioned earlier, they are indicators and motivators. Just like an indicator light on the dashboard of your vehicle, they send out a signal that something could be wrong. As a result, we need to investigate to see how serious, if at all, the problem might be.
However, they also add a certain kick—a motivator—which can be very painful. Why? Because we often ignore simple indicators. And, because God knows everything, and knows exactly what we need, He knew that we need to be motivated. Pain is a powerful motivator.
When the amount of pain crosses a certain threshold, we’re bound to take some action to at least investigate, if not seek outside help. That moment when we call a doctor, dentist, pastor, counselor, friend, or loved one for help is usually when the pain crosses a particular line. This is how God’s indicators and motivators are designed to work.
Therefore, to thwart these indicators is to thwart a critical part of life.
Note: While they are perfectly designed, these indicators and motivators do not always work perfectly in a sinful, fallen world. And, of course, neither do we when it comes to our responses.
THE PLACEBO EFFECT & LACK OF EFFECTIVENESS
In case you missed it in the previously cited articles: the placebos given have the same efficacy as the actual antidepressants. This has been known for a long time, yet it seems no real actions were taken regarding these facts.
The placebo rate here tells us at least three things:
- We live in such a pill-saturated, pill-dependent society that our attitude toward pills is very powerful – enough to mimic the real thing (if it were a real solution).
- This fact confirms that the notion of an organic/chemical cause was false, and the antidepressants are not really effective in addressing the cause.
- This should have effectively put a stop to the chemical fallacy, but it seems no one did anything about it.
True science would have passionately and diligently monitored this hypothesis each step of the way. True science would have pounced on the problems and made immediate and obvious corrections. And, in this case, true science would have pulled the plug decades ago.
Instead, we were left with tiny, hard-to-read “black box” warnings added to the packaging, triple speed disclaimers no one can keep up with on a TV commercial, and millions of dollars paid out to any suffering survivors who were fortunate enough to prevail over a multi-billion industry through the court system.
If our society truly cares about justice, this whole debacle will be thoroughly investigated, hefty damages paid, and severe consequences handed out.
THE NATURE OF SCIENCE & SCIENTISTS
Science, true science, is wonderful and helpful. However, science—as it usually plays out in reality, and wherever people are involved—is not all that we believe it to be.
The conclusions and outcomes are frequently tainted and distorted by biases, money, human nature, subjectivity, corruption, coercion, sin, politics, false narratives, jealousy, or quests for power, along with a lack of information, wisdom, or an understanding of God and His ways – not to mention the various agendas at play besides a simple desire for the truth. Because of all these factors and more, the conclusions are frequently false and misleading, at best.
However, too few realize this simple fact, or keep it in mind when it comes to science. This is particularly evident when they glibly tell others to “follow the science,” declare that “the science is settled,” or accuse someone who disagrees with them as being a “science-denier.”
We should always ask hard questions of whatever is claimed as science. This is especially true when it comes to what we put into our bodies. True proponents of science have no problem with answering questions. In fact, they often invite them.
It is when people shame you or attempt to discourage you from asking questions—especially when they censor or “cancel” anyone who does seek answers—that you know they are not thinking for themselves (e.g., echo-chamber; groupthink). In such cases, there is an agenda at play other than the truth. This is not science. It is anti-science cloaked in “science.”
Note: This reality about research and science (e.g., bias, corruption, etc.) was one of the first things taught when I was in college. Perhaps it is no longer taught, especially as objectivity has been swallowed up by subjectivity (e.g., feelings; man’s wisdom; mysticism; experiences).
GOD IS EXONERATED (as if He needed to be)
Anxiety and depression are not malfunctions, illnesses, or diseases. To label them as such is to impugn God’s character. As we have seen, God purposely designed depression and anxiety—just like other painful feelings—to be indispensable indicators and motivators.
These are all critical components for life, and essential for problem solving. They are specifically designed by God to motivate us to seek an understanding of what is causing these feelings, and to then resolve the underlying cause. Without these indicators and motivators, we will likely continue to suffer, as we will (ironically) be unable to pinpoint the cause of our problems. Subsequently, will we not be able to apply the solution.
This dynamic has largely been understood universally, until a few decades ago, when the counterfeit cause was constructed. Now these vital areas of life are often treated as abnormalities, breakdowns in our brain, or disturbances that need to be turned off. This, of course, misses the whole point. It defeats God’s intended purposes. And, therefore, we will continue to miss out on the solutions.
On the positive side: This helps us understand why the rates of anxiety and depression continue to skyrocket. Better yet, correcting this error will dramatically reverse this terrible trend.
Note: Few simple truths can help turn a person’s life around more than understanding this common sense reality about unwanted feelings (anger; conviction; hunger; bitterness; loneliness; tension). For more, see our booklet on Overcoming Anxiety
GODLESS + SOUL-LESS = ERROR + HARM
The areas of medicine and psychology generally see humans as soul-less beings, merely a collection of chemicals. Their adherence to evolution—while rejecting God, His Word, and His perfect design—naturally results in this view. These beliefs are, of course, wholly incompatible with and diametrically opposed to the biblical understanding. Yet this overall view was taught in several classes, at a self-proclaiming Christian university, to a physician I know.
Keep in mind, these two groups (the medical and psychology fields) are considered to be the authorities on both the body and the mind, as well as how they should rightly function. Therefore, they have a massive influence on what others believe in these areas. However, by forsaking the reality about God and His perfect ways, they often hold to and spread an erroneous and harmful ideology.
Their godless and soul-less belief is one main reason why they conclude that anxiety, depression, and many other things are merely malfunctions with our chemicals. And, naturally, they believe the solution also involves chemicals. But, in fact, the opposite is true. Our brain, mind, and chemicals are functioning just as God intended.
Note: There are many individuals in psychology and medicine who do not hold to these faulty beliefs, at least entirely. However, they are, at a minimum, heavily influenced by this ideology, largely because it is taught at every level. And, to one degree or another, it is enforced through licensing boards, employers, and other entities.
When it comes to psychology, it is, by definition, the study of the psyche, which is understood as the mind, or the soul. Some call psychology, or counseling psychology, “the care for souls,” or “soul care.” Others would say it is “the study of the mind.”
We know, however, that both mind and soul are non-material or non-physical. Yet the field of psychology, in general, believes humans are only material beings. Christianity believes in both the material and non-material.
It is noteworthy to point out here that every theorist of psychology—upon which all counseling psychology is built—wholeheartedly rejected, if not hated, Jesus and God’s Word. What is more, psychology does not have, nor will it ever have, an objective, unchanging standard by which it derives its authority and distinguishes truth from error, helpful from harmful, normal from abnormal, etc. Yet, when it comes to addressing life’s major struggles (i.e., in counseling), this ideology is relied upon in the Church far more than God’s Word. As sad as that is, it also helps explains why these struggles continue to escalate.
For that, and many other reasons, this ideology rejects the quintessential realities of the one true God, and how He designed us with a soul, or spirit—and that there is an eternal existence beyond life on earth. Nothing good can possibly come from such a false and distorted view (cp. Col 2:8; Ps 1:1).
This belief system also fully rejects God’s vital instructions about our hearts, which entirely make up who we really are (Prov 27:19; 1 Sam 16:7). From our hearts come the wellsprings of life (Prov 4:23), and it is our hearts that God fully sees and knows. Our hearts are also how we are to understand ourselves and others (Ps 51:6; Matt 6:21; Lk 6:43-45; Jas 4:1-3). It makes sense, then, that an ideology with these anti-Scriptural traits embraces and teaches the chemical imbalance idea, rather than getting to the heart of the matter.
Note: The above observations pertain to the overall area of psychology, rather than each individual’s belief. There are, of course, fine people in both psychology and medicine. In addition, there have been many in these fields who have courageously stood their ground and have not gone along with this chemical imbalance fallacy. Others have been even more bold, strongly speaking out against it, in the face of incredible opposition.
HOPE & SOLUTIONS
The areas of medicine, pharmaceuticals, and psychology desperately need to understand God—and how He has brilliantly designed our minds—and how our inner-being (heart/soul/spirit/mind) is interrelated and connected to our emotions, feelings, and behavior. Unfortunately, this will never happen, at least as a whole.
Note: The field of psychological counseling is increasingly hostile to biblical Christianity—as it is continues to succumb to “Woke-ism,” along with much of the medical field. This includes many individuals in these groups who are self-proclaiming Christ-followers. *We have written more on this elsewhere.
On the other hand, if they corrected just one thing—that unwanted feelings, especially anxiety and depression, are not malfunctions, but are instead vital God-designed indicators and motivators—countless people would be spared so much unnecessary suffering and many lives would be saved. And, far better, precious souls would be saved from death, literally.
Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth,
and someone turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death
and cover a multitude of sins.
(James 5:19-20)
Everyone understands, at least on some level, that we all have painful and undesired feelings, which are indicators and motivators (e.g., hunger; exhaustion; toothaches; chest pain; thirst). This is an inarguable and universally understood reality. No one really questions this simple understanding.
However, during the last few decades, two exceptions have been carved out: anxiety and depression. Now, as a result, these normal yet painful feelings are commonly diagnosed as diseases, disorders, and deficiencies. Why is that? What specific science went into this abrupt reversal? What data shows us that every human being had this wrong (until recently), and a few select people discovered the right way to understand and treat these maladies? What, exactly, would it take for us to invert this reality—from anxiety and depression being normal-yet-painful-and-unwanted feelings—to abnormalities and illnesses, which are caused by fouled up chemistry in our brain?
This clearly did not happen through science or truth seeking.
Nevertheless, if our society, or just a large portion of the Church, rightly understood and applied these truths (e.g., the cause and the solution), there would be so much less suffering from anxiety and depression. Better yet, millions could overcome these painful struggles and know peace and joy, along with much, much more! This can happen, but the Church has to be willing to admit all this, proclaim it everywhere, and make the necessary changes.
Fortunately, the conclusions and possible corrections mentioned in the recent study, corresponding articles, and this document offer us an abundance of hope – but only if we will respond appropriately. In additional there are numerous opportunities for many more corrections and right understandings, and they largely apply to how we view the following:
- The Pharmaceutical Industry
- The Medical Field
- Science (or what have been told is science)
- Counseling and Psychology
- The Church and Christian Leaders
- The Inner-Being of Humans (heart, soul, mind, spirit)
More specifically, we need to re-examine the specific counsel and ideology that has been taught for decades, including in much of the Church. More importantly, we must make the necessary corrections, all according to a holy and perfect God, not man’s faulty and frequently erroneous understanding. Best of all, we need to greatly improve our view of God’s Word—and rely on His Word of life more and more—especially when it comes to the counsel we give and receive.
There is always hope. Even in the midst of falsehoods, truth abounds with God. There are many answers in His Word. And corrections can always be made, which will benefit others greatly.
However, to the degree a person has invested in the above beliefs (man’s understanding of man vs. God’s reality about man), the more difficult it will be for that person to acknowledge the truths laid out here. In spite of that, there is unending hope and help in God’s Word of truth. But only if we have the right hearts toward His Word.
Blessed is the man
Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor stands in the path of sinners,
Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
He shall be like a tree
Planted by the rivers of water,
That brings forth its fruit in its season,
Whose leaf also shall not wither;
And whatever he does shall prosper.
(Psalm 1:1-3)
If we do not rightly understand the cause of any problem, then we cannot rightly address the cause of that issue. Therefore, we will not resolve the problem, and it will get worse. However, for decades we have been taught the wrong cause for depression (and anxiety).
Most would agree that anxiety and depression are getting worse and worse, day by day. Nevertheless, the false narratives regarding the cause of depression and anxiety (and many other issues) could be the number one reason for the rapid rise in these often excruciating and crippling experiences.
Surprisingly though, this tragic reality actually brings us hope. If we look at it in the right way, then we see that we have, in great irony, just improved our understanding of the cause of depression and anxiety. This is great news! And it gives us an amazing opportunity to make huge and lasting corrections, so that we can apply the right solutions.
We, the Church, must fully understand, and start effectively teaching this: The One who perfectly created and designed us does have the answers. It is long past time to go to God and God’s Word in these areas of life. He has more than proven Himself, especially in His Word of truth.
As for God, His way is perfect;
The word of the Lord is proven;
He is a shield to all who trust in Him.
(Psalm 18:30)
FURTHER CLARIFICATIONS
In order to facilitate a deeper understanding on this subject, here are some things that should be helpful to think through.
When it comes to medication, no one is saying that everyone should immediately stop taking their prescriptions (e.g., antidepressants; anti-anxiety meds, etc.). However, if one desires to do so, then they need to walk that through carefully, with much wisdom and preferably under the care of a physician—one who is, ideally, a believer with a biblical understanding of our minds and souls.
As a biblical counselor, I am not against taking medication. This false assumption and frequent false accusation is so prevalent in this field of ministry that I toyed with the idea of putting “I am not against taking medication” after every paragraph.
But I am, as we all should be, absolutely against taking medication that is unnecessarily prescribed and consumed. This is even more troubling when the medication does not address the cause of the problem, and frequently causes further suffering and many unintended issues (e.g., side-effects, which often include anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, violent behavior, etc.).
While certain medication may help lessen the unwanted feelings of anxiety and depression—given the recent corrections documented in these articles, and the explanations given here—everyone should rethink what they are taking, and why. And they should take special note of the side-effects, the withdrawal effects, the placebo effects, and the actual cause of their depression or anxiety.
Everyone who is taking medication, particularly for anxiety and depression, should have a thorough conversation with the person who prescribed and/or recommend it, particularly with the findings in these studies as the central topic.
Everyone should have a full understanding for why they were prescribed any medication, and how and why this new (but not new) information possibly changes their prescription. And they should immediately start addressing the actual cause of their anxiety and/or depression.
It is not wrong to take medication. There is no shame in taking it. However, it is a huge decision, one that will affect your body, mind, relationships, and life as a whole. Therefore, this must be weighed prayerfully, carefully, objectively, with as many facts as possible, alongside any other options on the table. Overall and above all, this should be done with the right understanding of God’s Word and how He designed us.
Everyone who spread this false narrative (e.g., depression/anxiety as a chemical imbalance) should, ideally, openly make corrections regarding this falsehood, particularly to the specific individuals they misled. This especially includes the pastors, Christian authors, counselors, and other leaders who have taught this harmful notion to those under their care or influence.
Taking medication is a serious undertaking, or at least it should be. While some medications can help some people to some degree, it is not without risk – and often great risk. Similarly, receiving counseling also has potential for great harm, or wonderful blessings, depending on the source of the counsel.
Given these possible outcomes, we all need to be exceedingly careful, wise, and discerning in these areas (cp. Acts 17:11; Heb 5:14). This means that we should—as Scripture tells us—ask tough questions, test the answers we receive, and then make decisions based on the truth we discern.
Test all things; hold fast what is good.
Abstain from every form of evil.
(1 Thessalonians 5:21-22)
QUESTIONS TO ASK
With all these things in mind, everyone who is seeking or already receiving counseling, or taking medication, should ask and receive reasonably clear, unambiguous, and understandable answers to these questions from their physician, counselor, pastor, biblical counselor, therapist, life-coach, psychologist, or psychiatrist.
- What, specifically, do you believe usually causes anxiety and depression?
- What, specifically, do you believe are the usual solutions to anxiety and depression?
- What did you believe—and what do you believe now, if that has changed recently—about the “chemical imbalance theory” and related ideas (e.g., biochemical causes for depression; low serotonin levels)?
- After talking with me, what, exactly, do you believe is causing—or largely contributing to—my anxiety and/or depression?
- What, exactly, do you believe is the solution for me?
- What exactly do you believe I can and should be doing (or not doing) about this, if anything?
- How, exactly, do you believe God and His Word are involved in understanding these problems, and in applying the solutions?
- Bonus Question: How would you explain our mind, soul, and heart, especially as they relate to anxiety and depression?
Feel free to give them this list of questions, and expect a legitimate response.
If they can’t (or won’t) give you sufficient answers—ones which the average person can understand—then you need to pray about and seriously consider going elsewhere for help.
GOOD & BAD NEWS
As we said when we began, there is good news – namely this:
God, in His Word, has given us numerous answers to our struggles, especially anxiety and depression.
But there’s bad news too.
This reality is really hard to believe for most people. And, sadly, it includes a large number of those in the Church.
Why is this so difficult to believe? Two main reasons come to mind: A functionally low or adversarial view of God’s Word, combined with decades of conditioning in erroneous constructs, particularly the soul-less and God-less view of life.
Note: It is very common for Christians to study and apply this anti-God ideology which rejects Jesus, along with the realities of our soul, heart, spirit, mind, and eternity. Even though they may add some Christianity to it, this does not negate the erroneous and harmful aspects. In fact, it can often make it worse, because a believer is more likely to fall for a deadly truth-and-error mixture over pure error on its own (cp. Gen 3:1ff).
As things stand today, very few Christians strongly believe that God has, through His Word, given us the many answers we need to these common problems (Ps 1:1-3; 19:7-11; Rom 15:4; 2 Tim 3:15-17; 2 Pet 1:3-4). Yes, many have a stated belief that God and His Word are sufficient. And, for the most part, they likely believe that they believe that. However, functionally speaking—by examining their actions, and what they do and do not study and apply—most do not truly believe in the sufficiency of Scripture.
This is no small error. In fact, it could be, at the very least, one of the top three problems that the Church has faced for decades. Yet very few talk about it.
Hopefully this will be the wake up call that so many need.
Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do not be partners with them. For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said:
“Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.
(Ephesians 5:6-17)

There are so many lies being told about psychiatric drugs. I hear Christians comparing the use of these powerful pills to, wearing eyeglasses, or drinking water. If those things are O.K. then why not take SSRI’s? We fight lies with the truth, great article Hope For Life! When will you be making this into a video, perhaps for youtube?

You have no idea how badly I needed this article. I work in public education, where since the pandemic, we’ve been squawked at and squawked at to watch out for the mental health crisis, yet we are given no answers. Kids are repeatedly drilled with suicide prevention assemblies but are given no hope. I sincerely believe they come away thinking “well we are doomed for a chemical imbalance and if pills can’t fix it, suicide is a good option”. This all actually is a huge source of stress for me.
I’ve spent most of today upset because our pastor inevitably inserts the “chemical imbalance” into her sermons. Yes, I said her…also a a source of stress for me because I don’t believe we should even have a female pastor, but we get what we get in this very rural area.
I’ve been repeatedly troubled by her standing in front of the congregation and inserting this narrative wherever she can into her sermons. I’ve had the urge all afternoon to knock on her door and tell her my feelings but it will change nothing. She had extensive education in counseling and works simultaneously as a paramedic so we often get heavy doses of “medical narrative” from her. She herself is a walking pharmacy. I would never change her mind in a million years.
Thank you for providing information that my heart has known and believed for many years. I wish I didn’t feel such a pull to try to “fix it” but I’m watching this ideology damage way too many people.
